RIT Housing Op.
on June 19, 2008 at 2:10 pmJon and I recently got hit with $20 charges ($40 total for all you mathematicians out there) by RIT Housing Operations. They claim that we stole, destroyed, or in some way removed a tower lamp from the room. I find this to be hilarious because, upon move-in, there was no lamp.
If you go to RIT or have moved into a room, you know that the normal course of action is to fill out a sheet that says if anything is missing or the room is damaged. I can’t honestly recall marking a lamp existing or not existing at the time of move-in. This is the first time in living there for four years that I have ever had a charge placed on me, so I have to assume that there was no field for it.
If I was a dumb ass and said that the lamp was good, then I will assume responsibility (but still be pretty pissed). If I didn’t mark a lamp or there was no field for one, then I am expecting this charge drop. Either way, RIT is scum for getting pissed about some ugly ass lamp they are probably going to throw away anyway considering they are remodeling all the rooms in the Inn.
Update by Jon 6/22/08:
Sent an email requesting a credit for this charge for both of our accounts. Turns out we explicitly stated on the move in form that this lamp was missing. Seems they didn’t even bother to read it until we complained. In any case, we got our money refunded.

You have now learned the first hard fast rule on renting or borrowing anything. Take Pictures of all rooms, apartments, cars and any equipment you beg, borrow or rent along with any important items you won and damage to your property.
Someone will always try to take advantage of a simple spot, tear, minisule scratch, poor skills or whatever. I have been to small claims court 6 times and WON all 6 times. 2 Apartments (1 RIT, 1 at Rustic), 2 rental cars (yes that hudge scratch was on the roof when I rented the car and the coffee stain was on the rung and I do not drinkg coffee), two home repair bad-work jobs, I also got money when the airlines did damage to my luggage and contents for 3 times more that they said it was worth. Pictures!! even poor cell pictures speak louder than words. It takes just a fee minutes!
Good luck!

Great news… We are living at Rustic now, hopefully they don’t give us any shit on the way out. I intended to get pics before we moved in, but forgot. Not sure if Nick got any.
You think it’s worth taking some now, even with furniture in place and such?

Johnny On the spot ..sorry I could not resist. YES even at this late date, turn the date on, take a pic with a newspaper of something to establish the date.
Rustic wanted me to pay for “cracked tub” and toliet cover, when I lived there no crack! When I left no crack! And for heavens sake keep copies of all the papers you sign. They did not contact me until 2 months after we moved.

I have some pictures of the place from our move in. I imagine we will take careful pictures of everything during move out to establish the condition everything is in on our way out the door.
