Item of the Week: Wegman’s Tin Roof Ice Cream
on October 8, 2008 at 2:00 pmIce cream may be one of the greatest treats that man ever invented (that and pizza, I say). I tend to indulge on a lot of ice cream when I can. I enjoy most any kind: vanilla, cookie dough, cookies and cream, strawberry… the list goes on.
So, when perusing the grocery store this week, I was looking for some delicious ice cream that comes on a budget, that I had also never tried before. Enter: Wegman’s Tin Roof Ice Cream. Stupid name, great food.
Ingredients
Vanilla
Chocolate Fudge
Mexican Peanuts
Silly Name
Maybe I missed something in the ice cream world, but this name is flat-out stupid. What were they thinking, calling this “Tin Roof” thus making sure that people don’t get a single clue as to what the name means in relation to the ingredients of the ice cream.
If I was on a quiz show, and they asked me what kind of ice cream tin roof was supposed to be, I would have no clue. The name does nothing to allude to what one is to be having. Names like “Cookie Dough” and “Cookies & Cream” at least give you a fair idea about what you are going to ingest… not for “Tin Roof” though. To be honest, why not just call it “Mexican Sundae” as that is what this essentially is.
Tastes like good
Overall, I would say mexican sundae is the closest comparison. I gave it a try with Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup topped on it and it was pretty delicious. The vanilla lacks some flavor but that seems to be a symptom of most Wegmans ice cream, but the chocolate fudge was tasty. I didn’t try it without choco-syrup so I can’t say what its like without it, but choco-syrup seemed to add a bit of liquid chocolate that it may have needed.
At risk of sounding strange, it needed more nuts. You get one or two peanuts every third or fourth scoop. I like peanuts in my ice cream and could have done with at least one peanut per scoop… preferably two. I imagine this is what keeps the cost of the ice cream down at around $2, which is pretty respectable for a quart of ice cream.
Conclusion
Overall, I would say this was a pretty good buy. It won’t be ranked in my top three for ice cream, but I might pick it up from time to time as a healthy change-up. Once again, at the price point that Wegmans is offloading this at, its well worth the buy.
My suggestion would be to give it a try the next time you are looking for some ice cream. It really can’t hurt unless you are allergic to peanuts or ice cream or something.
